Acrylic paintings by Hilton Head Island artist John K. Crum will be featured in a monthlong exhibition opening Oct. 13 at Art League Gallery.

“Finding the Rhythm of Nature: Art That Makes You Smile” will run through Nov. 13 and feature works inspired by the Lowcountry and Crum’s travels. An artist reception is scheduled for Oct. 21, followed by a painting demonstration Oct. 30.

Crum describes his style as “gently surreal landscapes,” combining recognizable settings and subjects with stylized and surreal elements. His acrylic paintings use bright colors, bold brushstrokes and layered compositions, with subjects ranging from Lowcountry landscapes and waterways to figures and wildlife.

His work explores themes including love, inner peace and nostalgia, often incorporating symbols and narrative elements into the paintings.

“I invite you to explore my paintings up close and embark on your own magical journey,” Crum said. “Hearing viewers and collectors express how my art makes them smile and what it means to them is a source of profound satisfaction and motivation.”

A graduate of The Ringling School of Art & Design, Crum has worked in illustration, graphic arts, book design, mural painting and fine art. He moved to Hilton Head from Ohio more than 20 years ago and draws inspiration from the Lowcountry as well as his travels.

The artist reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. Crum will present an artist demonstration at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30. The exhibition, reception and demonstration are free and open to the public.
