Fur Ball grows from family tribute into annual PAL fundraiser

What began as the Archer family’s effort to honor a loved one has grown into an annual celebration benefiting Palmetto Animal League.

The Archer family’s connection with Palmetto Animal League began soon after they settled in the Lowcountry. Christopher Archer’s mother was experiencing physical and mental health challenges, and her doctor recommended pet therapy.

Christopher recalls, “We started searching for a pet to keep her company, and PAL welcomed her with open arms. They treated her with dignity and respect despite her health issues.”

PAL found a match for Christopher’s mother with an adult cat, and Smudgette became part of the Archer family.

“I’m convinced Mom lived a couple extra years because of PAL and Smudgette,” Poppy says.

After Christopher’s mother died in late 2024, the family began discussing ways to honor her memory while thanking PAL for the joy and companionship it had provided. The Archers decided to host a “dress your best” evening featuring music and food as an event to support PAL. The event ultimately became the Fur Ball.

Last February, approximately 70 guests gathered in a ballroom at the Sonesta Resort on Hilton Head Island, where Christopher works part time. The Archers personally covered all of the event’s expenses, allowing every dollar donated by guests to go directly to PAL.

“It was an amazing success!” Christopher says. “We raised $10,000, and we hope to double that next year.”

Now, planning is underway for the second annual Fur Ball, scheduled for Feb. 7, 2027, at the Sonesta Resort. The event will transition to a ticketed evening featuring a gourmet buffet dinner, an auction, live music by nationally recognized jazz musician Joe Gransden and dancing.

Tickets will be $150 per person, with $100 from each ticket going directly to Palmetto Animal League. Ticket sales open Oct. 5 through Eventbrite.

The Archers plan to continue funding most of the event’s expenses themselves, and the Sonesta will offer attendees special room rates for the weekend.

as possible,” Christopher says. “We want to make it one of ‘the’ events to attend on Hilton Head every year.”

For the Archers, the Fur Ball is a meaningful way to give back. It is a way to honor Christopher’s mother and the organization that helped bring Smudgette into her life.

Madison Thomas, PAL director of development, says, “A beautiful part of this is the love that Smudgette brought Christopher’s mother. Smudgette was an amazing cat companion for her when she relocated here, and now we get to come full circle and celebrate this wonderful event. One cat moved this family, and from their generosity, we have an incredible event that supports our mission to give every animal a second chance.”

Every ticket and donation helps continue PAL’s mission of providing care and finding homes for animals in need. For more information about the Fur Ball or to buy tickets, visit Eventbrite.
