Lighthouse celebrates 150 years

The 150th anniversary of the Hunting Island Lighthouse celebration will be held Oct. 16-18 with festivities at the lighthouse, on the beach and in other Beaufort locations.
An opening reception will be Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery, 1001 Bay St. Admission is free and open to the public.
Saturday activities include a sand sculpture contest, kayak race and steel band music from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park. The USCB Performing Arts Center will host a student art exhibition from 6 to 7 p.m. and a historical play from 7 to 9 p.m., with a question and answer session on the history of the lighthouse by Dr. Larry Rowland.
Sunday events at the park begin at 1 p.m. with a 5K run-walk and free kayak demonstrations, followed by an oyster roast at 2 p.m. and the grand ceremony at 3 p.m.
